Minnesota: Reducing threshold for voter recount could save taxpayers' money

February 7, 2013

HF197, sponsored by Rep. Michael Beard(R-Shakopee), would require a difference of less than 3,000 votes or 0.25 percent of total votes in federal, state constitutional or judicial offices in order for the state to fund a recount. Currently, a 0.5 percent vote difference is enough to prompt a full recount.

The House Elections Committee approved the bill Tuesday and sent it to the House floor. There is no Senate companion.
